Character is informed by culture and culture is informed by environment…N.K. Jemisin

Welcome to Worldbuilding LIBA 230  for the Fall of 2020.
Before you come to the first Zoom class on the morning of Sept. 8, I am asking you to complete two specific assignments.

The first assignment is to watch or listen to the fantasy novelist, N.K. Jemisin conduct a short workshop in Worldbuilding.  There are two versions of this workshop available, one in video of the session she did for Wired magazine,  and the second she did in an audio for a popular podcast.  Here are the links:

Nora Jemisin, one of the most significant writers of speculative fiction in the last 20 years, outlines in her workshop a process that is pretty much an overview of  what we will undertake in this course during this semester.  We will be taking a step-by-step development of a secondary world beginning, this week, with the basic astrophysics of your world. In the second assignment before the first class we will begin by shaping the planet or moon on which the culture and society you will be inventing resides.  We will do this in the next assignment which will be posted on Wednesday, Sept. 2.  Meanwhile, please watch or listen to Jemisin's workshop.  The video, is of course, more visual but I think the audio version of the workshop is more satisfying.
